The brand was an instant success and sold at Fred Segal, Barney’s, Nordstrom… MISC. by Janet Howard brand propelled her career with 2 runways shows, tons of press, and a nomination and won “California Rising Star Award.”

After 4 years in business with MISC., Janet decided to up the game and penetrate the luxury market, launching a Young Designer’s brand, Janet Howard. Rooted in tailoring, Janet’s brand was successfully known for sharp suits, perfectly tailored shirts and dresses, and well-structured coats and jackets. Janet’s tailoring expertise launched her into contemporary stardom. In 2000, W Magazine branded her as a “contemporary-guru.”

In 1999 Janet Howard was recruited by Levi Strauss to launch a first-ever partnered, “New Career” contemporary concept brand, “Slates Janet Howard.” This women’s better contemporary ready-to-wear collection encompassed jackets, coats, blazers, dresses, shirts, and pants. It was very successful with shops in Macy’s and sold to numerous department stores throughout the US. “Slates Janet Howard” first ad campaign was shot by the world renowned photographer, Richard Avedon.  With all the success of “Slates Janet Howard,” Janet was promoted V.P. “After all these years in the fashion industry and hundreds of incredible collections I have designed and developed … as a curvy /plus size women, I have nothing to wear.”

“It's always been my dream to create clothing for curvy / plus women. In the world of contemporary/luxury, it's an unspoken rule of the industry, never to go above a size 12.”

“I wanted to offer the curvy / plus woman beautiful shapes and sophisticated tailoring incorporating luxurious fabrics, leathers and fur at an affordable contemporary price point. I mean a true luxury brand that really fits a curvy / plus women, designed and developed by an actual curvy / plus woman. So after lots of planning with my partner, we decided to launch our new brand, janet howard +.“
